The MEDPOR® Approach to Ear Reconstruction

A Single Surgery. A Complete Ear. A Faster Recovery.

Dr. John Reinisch pioneered the MEDPOR® ear reconstruction technique in 1991. It is now the most advanced, proven surgical treatment for microtia — and the foundation of the combined approach offered through the Learn Microtia program.

What Is MEDPOR®?

MEDPOR is a microporous, high-density polyethylene implant designed to reconstruct the outer ear. The framework is biocompatible — meaning the body’s own blood vessels and tissue integrate with the material, promoting natural healing.

Each implant is customized to match the shape and projection of the patient’s opposite natural ear, ensuring symmetry.

Single-Session Surgery

Dr. Reinisch typically completes MEDPOR ear reconstruction in a single procedure. Traditional rib cartilage methods require two to five separate surgeries. One surgery means less time under anesthesia, less disruption to the family, and faster results.

No Hospitalization Required

Most MEDPOR procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. Patients typically go home the same day, with a recovery focused on comfort and protective care of the surgical site.

Faster Recovery, Less Pain

Because MEDPOR does not require harvesting rib cartilage from the patient’s body, there is no donor site, no chest scar, and significantly less post-operative discomfort. Light activities can usually resume within days.

Earlier Treatment — As Young as Age 3

Integrated Hearing Restoration

When performed alongside CAM surgery — a coordinated procedure with Dr. Nazarian — MEDPOR ear reconstruction can be combined with ear canal creation, eardrum reconstruction, and middle ear restoration in a single session. This means both cosmetic appearance and functional hearing can be addressed together.
